Summer is right around the corner, which means it’s time to test and check your home’s electrical system to prepare for a summer full of fun and adventure. With kids at home, barbeques in the backyard, and spending plenty of time outside, preparing your home’s electrical system is an important step in keeping your home and your family safe this summer.
Your home uses electricity differently during the summer months, and if you don’t prepare your home and ensure that it’s ready to handle the often increased electricity load needed to power your home, you may end up causing damage to your home’s electrical system. To help you prepare for the summer, here’s LiveWire Electrical’s summer electrical checklist.
Check Your Air Conditioning Unit
You should always have your air conditioning unit inspected before you start using it for the spring and summer. If you don’t plan on having your air conditioning unit professionally inspected, you should clean the air conditioning fans before using it for the first time. Dirt, dust, and grime often build up on the fan blades over the fall and winter, which can impact your unit’s efficiency when you use it in the warmer months.
Test All Electrical Outlets
While it may be tedious, it’s a good idea to test all of the electrical outlets in your home each spring to prepare for the summer months. You can test your electrical outlets by plugging in a small appliance or electrical item into each outlet to ensure that the outlet works correctly. By testing your outlets, you can potentially fix a problem with an outlet before it causes serious damage to your home.
Be Aware Of Power Lines
Spending time outside means you need to be aware of any live power lines in the area. If you have trees in your yard that are close to power lines, you should consider having them professionally trimmed so that they don’t grow to touch the power lines over time. Kids should never play near power lines or climb trees that are near power lines, and if a summer storm strikes and downs a power line, call your power company’s emergency number immediately.
Call 811 Before You Dig
Summertime often means outdoor projects. From pools and patios to landscaping and so much more, there’s a lot that we can do to improve the exterior of our homes. That being said, it’s important to be safe when starting any outdoor home project. Before you dig, even if you’re just digging with hand tools, you should call 811 or file an online ticket to have your utilities and underground power lines marked by your area’s utility companies. It’s completely free to call, and within just a few days all of your underground lines will be clearly marked, keeping you safe while you dig.
Stay Safe Around Water
It’s extremely important to be aware of your surroundings when you’re near water. If you’re near a pool or natural body of water, inspect the area for any downed power lines, faulty wiring, or other electrical hazards in the area. Water and electricity don’t mix well, so it’s always best to play it safe and check the area before diving in for a swim.
